Hi everyone:

I hope that everyone is doing well and that interview invitations are starting to come in!  This is an exciting time in the process.  If you have been getting many invitations, it usually means that you are a competitive applicant.  Remember, no one will get every interview offer and sometimes, it seems random where you get rejected from.   Here are some helpful tips on enjoying the process and on saving money.

1) You will be seeing the same people at your interviews.  For me, that was the best part of the process because I met many people and made many good friends as a result of going through this.

2) Most places will have a dinner or get-together the night before the interview.  If you can make it, you should go.  If you are not able to make it, do not feel bad about it.  It is more for you to find out about the program.  I do not think that it ultimately affect the outcome.  If the program at which you interview at do not have such an event, you should arrange one on your own with the other applicants.

3) Once you get to know one another, make arrangements to share hotel rooms and even car rentals.  I shared a room with someone for most of my interviews.

4) If you have not done so, apply for a Delta SkyMiles and American Airlines AAdvantage card.  Each gives you enough points to get a roundtrip flight.  Do so now so that you will get the points when you need it.  Try to fly the same airlines if possible.  I am going to Australia next month using miles I earned through the interview process!

5) Interview at as many programs as you are comfortable with.  I received 43 interview offers last year, interviewed at 23,  ended up ranking 14 of them, and matched at my first choice program.  I spent over $10,000.  In retrospect, I probably did not need to interview at that many programs but at the time, that was what I was comfortable with.  Interviewing at many places will also help you to feel more comfortable interviewing and undoubtedly, you will be better at it the more  you do it.

6) Remember, the majority of the programs will offer you fantastic training to be a plastic surgeon. You need to decide what your goals are and what factors in a program are important to you.  Even the most prestigious programs might not be a fit for everyone.

7) Good luck everyone and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at prsmatch2010@gmail.com.

P.S.  Here is a post that I received from one of your colleages:

…………….

I am sure many programs have been offering interviews by now.  So far I have heard from Temple, Penn, South Carolina, Chattanooga, Nebraska, Mayo-Arizona, Scott & White, LSU, UNC, Pittsburgh, Lahey Clinic and Camden.   If anyone would like to know any interview dates, please let me know.  What other programs have made offers?

So far I am planning on trying to use the same airline and hotel chain (along with their rewards programs) as much as possible.  Anybody have any other cost-savings tips?  The expenses are starting to add up.

Also, I noticed that last year people were using this blog to arrange dinners the night before and share the cost of hotel rooms and rental cars…

lesley28@yahoo.com

Good luck everyone!

UT Memphis and U Mississippi sent out their interview invitations this past week.  Starting this month and over the next few months up to March, you will be receiving invitations almost on a daily basis.  Remember, even if you do not hear from a program, there is still  a chance that you will be granted an interview later as people decline their interviews.  Most places interview 15-20 people for each position with the exception of a few top programs that interview 5-10 applicants per position.

I will no longer be posting interview invitation updates on this blog but I will continue to post blogs to answer any questions that any of you have.  Just post a question on here or email me at prsmatch2010@gmail.com.

The application and interview process is an exhausting and costly one but also a very fun  one.  The best part of the process is seeing the same people and making friends with your future colleagues.

Again, I will be happy to answer any questions that anyone has.  Best of luck to everyone.

Temple University sent out its invitation for interview today via email (according to a post by Chatter).  This is more than a month earlier than last year.  I wish everyone the best of luck.

Hi applicants,

If you have submitted your application for the 2011 SF Match, you can expect to receive invitatioins from programs starting in early December (up to March).  Please go to the earliest entry of this blog (December 2009) and read through all the entries and you will have a good idea of the timeline of this process.

Hi everyone:

The statistics for the 2010 PRS match is out.  This year, 146 people applied, of which 103 rank lists were submitted, with 98 ranked applicants and 84 matched applicants.  This gives an 82% match rate, which continues the upward trend from the previous two years (57% and 73%).  There were  51 programs offering a total of 97 positions.  There were 13 unmatched positions.

Again, the lower number of applicants could be due to the change from a 2-year to a 3-year training process, coupled with an economy in recession.  In addition, it might reflect the decrease in the number of applicants who would  have applied to the independent pathway but who are already in the integrated program…

I hope that everyone is doing well…

Hi everyone:

For those applicants who did not match this year, you will need to to the the SF Match website (http://www.sfmatch.org/vacancies/r_plasticsurgery.htm), fill out a form, fax it to (415) 561-8535, and pay $35 to have your CAS application forwarded to the programs.

The vacant positions will be posted on the SF Match website on Monday, May 17, 2010.  According to the SF Match website, “Applicants who did not match may begin applying to these positions by negotiating directly with the programs regarding any documentation that they require.”   You should go to the SF website and read all the rules and instructions of this process and contact your mentors/advisers to help call the programs and speak on your behalf on Monday.

If anyone has any advice, comments, or insight into this process, please post it here.

For the results of the 2010 SF Match, please see the previous post.   If you matched, send me your name and the institution at which you matched and I will include it on the list.

Hi everyone:

The day has finally come — nine months in waiting!  I have to tell you that I am extremely nervous and anxious as I think of all the different scenarios of the outcome.

According to the SF Match website, the match results will be released to the programs today and that programs will generally call you on the same day to let you know.  I have also heard that you will get an email today stating whether or not you matched.  If you do not hear from a program today, you can log onto the SF Match website on Friday, May 14, to find out where you matched at.

Again, best of luck to everyone today.  I hope that each and every one of you will be happy and relieved today.  You have come very far.  If you hear anything today, please post it on this blog.

-H

Hi everyone:

I would like to wish everyone the best of luck tomorrow and on the Big Day on Friday!
